COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Northwestern currently is in fourth place after a wildly successful day one Thursday at the Big Ten Championships in the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio.
The Wildcats earned three NCAA `A' automatic times in individual events, while also qualifying their 200 free relay for the NCAA Championships. Senior Andrea Hupman (Lawrenceville, Ga./Brookwood) finished second in the 50 free to earn All-Big Ten honors for the fourth-straight year.
Northwestern currently has 139 points, one point better than fifth-place Wisconsin. Penn State is in third with 145 points, six better than NU. Michigan leads the meet with 182 points.

Morning Preliminaries Portion of Day One at the Big Ten Championships:
Three different Wildcats broke a pair of school records, a pool record and a Big Ten Championships record Thursday morning during preliminary heats on day one of the Championships at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
Hupman broke the Northwestern, pool and Big Ten Championships meet record in the 50 free with an NCAA 'A' automatic qualification time of 22.26 to lead the field heading into Thursday night's finals. She time broke the previous school record of 22.28 set by Courtney Allen in 2000.
Hupman trailed Wisconsin's Jackie Vavrek and her time of 10.79 at the turn, but staged a furious final 25 yards to come home in field-best 11.24 and beat Vavrek by .04 of a second. Both Hupman and Vavrek finished a full .4 of a second ahead of the rest of the field.
Even better for the Wildcats, sophomore Emily Wong (Nepean, Ontario/St. Joseph's) and freshman Teisha Lightbourne (Nassau, Bahamas/Peddie School (N.J.)) both lit up the pool with career-best swims in the prelims, turning in identical 22.95 efforts to qualify sixth and put three 'Cats among the eight swimmers in the championship final.
In the 500 free, sophomore
Kassia Shishkoff (Raleigh, N.C./St. David's School) went nuts with career-best and NCAA `A' automatic qualification time of 4:44.00 to break the 18-year-old school record of 4:44.68 set by Marilyn Peck in 1990.
While Peck's record stood for 18 years, Shishkoff's did not last even 18 minutes. In the very next heat, freshman Ellen Grigg (Charlotte, N.C./Latin School) swam a collegiate-best 4:43.92 to lower Shishkoff's record by .08 of a second and qualify herself fourth for Thursday night's finals. Shishkoff is the No. 6 seed in the championship final for NU.
Senior Katie Braun (Edina, Minn./Edina) was Northwestern's top finisher in the 200 IM, earning a second swim in the bonus final with a 22nd-place time and NCAA `B' provisional qualifying standard of 2:03.84. Braun will scratch from the evening swim, however, to focus on Northwestern's relays.
Elsewhere in the preliminary heats Thursday morning, freshman Liza Engstrom (Reno, Nev./Robert McQueen) chopped .43 of a second off her seed time in the 50 free to finish 17th and earn a spot in the bonus final with a 23.32. Joining Engstrom in the bonus final is freshman Erin Reilly (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East), who cut .44 of a second off her seed time to turn in a 23.47 and tie for 20th.
Finals Portion of Day One at the Big Ten Championships
Northwestern opened the finals Thursday night with an NCAA `A' cut in the 200 free relay, getting a time of 1:30.49 out of Lightbourne, Wong, Engstrom and Hupman to finish fourth.
In the finals of the 500 free, Shishkoff turned in an `A' time of 4:45.09 to take sixth, while Grigg was right behind her in seventh with a 4:46.65.
After edging Vavrek in the prelims of the 50 free, Hupman ended up .04 of a second behind her with a 22.40 to take second place. Hupman again was behind after the initial 25 yards before outperforming the entire field on the way back with a split of 11.32, however this time it was not enough to overcome Vavrek.
Wong ended up seventh with a 23.14 and Lightbourne took eighth with a 23.30 during the night session. Reilly won the bonus final with a 23.39, while Engstrom had a 23.49 to take 19th overall.
On the 1-meter diving board, redshirt senior Leanne Dumais (Ventura, Calif./Buena) scored points for the 'Cats with a score of 279.90 to finish seventh.
In the final event of the night, the Wildcats' 400 medley relay team of Katie Eschenburg (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead), Hayley Fry (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar), Braun and Hupman took the bronze medal with a season-best and NCAA `B' cut of 3:39.01.
