COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Senior Andrea Hupman (Lawrenceville, Ga./Brookwood) won the first Big Ten title of her career Friday night at the McCorkle Aquatic Center, breaking the Northwestern, pool and Big Ten Championships meet records in the 200 free.
Hupman's time of 1:44.89 is an NCAA `A' cut in the event, and is nearly two full seconds faster than her own previous school record set in 2005. Hupman is Northwestern's first Big Ten champion in a swimming event since Merritt Adams won the 200 fly in 2002.
Hupman's school, pool and meet records come on the heels of her performance Thursday in the 50 free, where she also set NU, pool and meet records with a 22.26 in her preliminary heat.
As a team, Northwestern is in fifth place at the meet with 290 total points, 28 ahead of Wisconsin and 35 behind fourth-place Penn State. Minnesota is leading the meet with 420.5 points.
Friday morning preliminary portion of the Big Ten Championships:
After breaking Northwestern school records three times Thursday at the Big Ten Championships, another NU record fell during Friday morning's preliminary action at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio.
Freshman Liza Engstrom (Reno, Nev./Robert McQueen) turned in an NCAA `B' provisional qualifying time of 54.82 to qualify seventh overall in the 100 back, but more importantly Engstrom broke Dominique Diezi's school record of 54.95 set in 1998.
Sophomore Kassia Shishkoff (Raleigh, N.C./St. David's School) added another career-best to her Championships tally in the 400 individual medley, qualifying for the top spot in the consolation final with an NCAA `B' provisional qualifying time of 4:18.01 in the event. Her previous career-best time in the event was a 4:19.41 set last year.
In the 100 fly, senior
Katie Braun (Edina, Minn./Edina) also had a career-best effort to qualify in the No. 9 spot for the evening's finals heats. Braun's NCAA `B' cut of 54.21 is just .02 of a second away from the Northwestern school record, tying
Carmen Cosgrove's second-best time in school history.
Hupman, who took second in the 50 freestyle Thursday night, qualified second overall for the championship heat of the 200 free Friday morning. Hupman's time of 1:47.25 is an NCAA `B' cut. Also earning a spot in the championship final with a `B' time of 1:48.86 was freshman Ellen Grigg (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin), who qualified No. 8 overall.
Junior Hayley Fry (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) added to the career-best times Friday morning with a 1:02.57 in the 100 breast to take sixth overall and earn a spot in the championship final.
Both sophomore Genny Szymanski (Haines, Alaska/Haines) and freshman Katie Eschenburg (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) earned second swims in the bonus final of the 100 back for the 'Cats with times of 56.68 and 56.82, respectively.
Friday night's finals portion of the Big Ten Championships:
The Wildcats led off the night with an NCAA `B' cut of 1:40.78 to take fifth in the 200 medley relay. Engstrom, Fry, Braun and Teisha Lightbourne (Nassau, Bahamas/Peddie School (N.J.) made up the squad for NU.
Shishkoff then had one of the most impressive swims in recent history for Northwestern. The sophomore shattered the Northwestern school record in the consolation final of the 400 IM, winning the heat with an NCAA `A' automatic qualification time of 4:14.52, nearly five full seconds ahead of the next swimmer in her heat. The time broke the previous record of 4:17.59 set back in 1995 by Laura Yenglin.
The school records continued to fall when Braun broke the Northwestern mark in the consolation final of the 100 fly, winning the heat with an `A' cut of 53.57 to break Christy Wicke's mark of 54.19, also set back in 1995.
In addition to Hupman's win in the 200 free, Grigg took seventh with a 1:48.65, lowering her NCAA `B' cut of 1:48.86 from the morning session.
Fry captured fourth for the 'Cats in the 100 breast with a 1:02.39 in the championship final, besting her time of 1:02.57 from the prelims. Engstrom cut .01 of a second off her prelim time in the 100 back to take seventh with a 54.81.
In diving action, senior Leanne Dumais (Ventura, Calif./Buena) captured fifth on the 3-meter board with a score of 315.75 for the 'Cats.
Northwestern closed out Saturday's action as best as it knew how, breaking yet another school record in the 800 free relay. The team of Hupman, Emily Wong (Nepean, Ontario/St. Joseph's), Grigg and Shishkoff went a 7:13.40 to break the NU record of 7:13.92 set just last year. The squad finished third, just .01 of a second out of second place with their NCAA `B' cut.
