No. 1 Seed Northwestern Set To Make Bid For National Title

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Top-ranked Northwestern will begin its quest toward a national title this weekend. The journey begins as the Wildcats play host to the regional first and second rounds of the NCAA championships May 9-10, at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center. Joining Northwestern at the regional site in Evanston will be the University of Illinois-Chicago, Indiana and Louisville. First round matches will take place at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Friday, May 9, with the second round regional final at noon Saturday, May 10. Below is a schedule of first and second round matches to be held in Evanston this weekend. Matches will be moved indoors to the Combe Tennis Center in the event of inclement weather.
First Round - Friday, May 9
10 a.m., Match 1: Louisville vs. Indiana
Second Round - Saturday, May 10 Noon, Match 3: Winner of Match 1 vs. Winner of Match 2
The top-ranked Wildcats will host the UIC Flames in first round action Friday. Northwestern holds an all-time series lead over UIC, 5-0. Riding a team record 20-match winning streak dating to early February, Northwestern is just six wins away from a national title. With a win Friday, the 'Cats would face the winner of Indiana and Louisville in a second round matchup Saturday. Although Northwestern has a 21-25 all-time deficit against Indiana, the Wildcats had a convincing 6-1 victory over the Hoosiers on April 6 at Vandy Christie. Northwestern and Louisville have never met. The Wildcats had four singles and one doubles pair selected to compete for a national title. Freshman Maria Mosolova (Moscow, Russia), junior Georgia Rose (Mettawa, Ill./North Shore Country Day), sophomore Samantha Murray (Altrincham, England/Altrincham Grammar) and sophomore Lauren Lui (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) were all selected as NCAA singles qualifiers. Rose and Lui will concurrently challenge for the doubles title. The round of 16 for the NCAA team championship moves to Tulsa, Okla., and runs from May 15-20 at the University of Tulsa. The singles and doubles championships will be held in Tulsa May 21-26.
