NORMAN, Okla. - Three Oklahoma football players have been named to the preseason watch list for the 2008 Nagurski Trophy. Auston English, DeMarcus Granger and Nic Harris all are on the list for the honor that is presented annually to the top defensive player in college football.
The trophy is sponsored by the Charlotte Touchdown Club and is presented by the Football Writers Association of America.
English, a junior defensive end, was an All-Big 12 selection last season when he made 36 tackles. He ranked No. 15 nationally with 9.5 sacks and also logged a team-high 13 tackles for loss.
Granger, a junior defensive tackle, made 11 starts last season and was credited with 35 stops, including 8.5 behind the line of scrimmage. He topped OU's interior defensive linemen with 3.5 sacks.
Harris, a senior safety,had 74 tackles to rank No. 5 on last year's Big 12 Championship team. That figures ranks first among the returning players for 2008. Harris also had two interceptions, 9.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks.
The FWAA All-America Committee selects the Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner from the association's 11- man All-America defensive team in November. The watch list was developed by the FWAA All-America committee with the help of the schools and conferences.
