Box Score

NORFOLK, VA--Old Dominion University (19-21/10-10) junior righthander Anthony Shawler (Oscar Smith HS) tossed a complete game two-hit shutout and struckout a school record tying 18 batters as the Monarchs defeated Northeastern, 10-0 Friday night.

The 18 strikeouts ties him for the school mark originally set on April 15, 2006 by Jason Godin against the same Northeastern Huskies. Justin Verlander ('04) now with the Detroit Tigers fanned 17 twice during his Monarch career.

Shawler walked one batter, hit one, and held Northeastern hitless until the sixth inning when Ryan MaGuire led off the inning with a single to left. The Huskies other hit came in the ninth by Jeff Dunlap, a singled to right to lead off the inning. Shawler is now 5-2 and lowers his earned run average to 4.36. This was his second complete game of the year and he now has 83 strikeouts in 64 innings of work.

Bryan Cipolla (Plainview, NY.), Gerard Hall (Washington, DC) and Edgar Hernandez (Luquillo, PR) each knocked in three runs for the Monarchs who pounded out 17 hits on the evening.

Cipolla singled home Max Most (Port Washington, NY. ) in the third and hit a two-run homer in the seventh with Jimmy Miles (Orlando, FL.) aboard. Hall doubled home Anthony Shawler in the fifth, doubled in Jake McAloose (Virginia Beach, VA.) in the sixth and hit a solo homer in the eighth. Edgar Hernandez Slammed a three-run homer in the ODU five-run fifth inning which plated Hall and McAloose.

Gerard Hall enjoyed his first four-hit game of his career, while Cipolla, McAloose Each had three hits on the night.

Because of the strong possibility of rain, the two teams will play Saturday at 2 p.m.instead of the originally scheduled time of 4.
