NORFOLK, VA-- Old Dominion University Head Men's Basketball coach Blaine Taylor announced today that John Richardson has been named an assistant coach with the Monarchs. Richardson has served as the Director of Basketball Operations at ODU the last three years.

"John's success speaks volumes on how much he has done in his career," said Taylor. "Obviously we felt this was his career path when we hired him as Director of Basketball operations three years ago. We felt that he would grow with our program. John is more than ready for this opportunity to enhance his responsibilities. He has had hands-on experience as a successful high school coach. John is a good example of someone in our immediate area who has come out of various basketball settings and has added growth rings on his tree for this opportunity."

" I am extremely appreciative and humble about this tremendous opportunity," said Richardson. "I carry this responsibility with great pride and respect to Old Dominion University. I look forward to the endless possibilities that our program will strive to reach, and the commitment that our administration and coaching staff will provide for our student athletes. I wish to thank coach Taylor for his continued support in my career development"

Prior to coming to ODU, Richardson was the 2004 and 2005 Virginia High School Coaches Association AAA State Coach of the Year at Woodside High School. During the three years at Woodside, his teams captured the Virginia AAA State Championship in 2004 and 2005.

Richardson led Woodside to three Eastern Regional Championships and two Peninsula District (2004 and 2005) titles. Woodside won Peninsula District Tournament Championships in 2005 and 2002 when he was an assistant coach. Richardson was also honored as the Associated Press AAA Coach of the Year in 2004.

Prior to becoming head coach at Woodside, Richardson was the head junior varsity coach at Woodside from 1996-1999. He also served as an assistant coach, and junior varsity coach at T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, VA. in 1999-2000.

Richardson has also participated and organized fundraisers, and community relations programs. Since 1996 he has served as an assistant coach for the Virginia Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) 17-under all-star traveling team, as well as counseling positions at various basketball camps.

Richardson graduated from Elizabeth City State University in 1995 with a degree in Health and Physical Education with a minor in Biology. He received a master's degree from Old Dominion University in 2003 in sports management. Richardson was a four- year basketball letterman at Elizabeth City State.

John and his wife Leah reside in Hampton.
