2008 Pac-10 Championship, Day One
April 21, 2008 PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif.- Defending champion Tiffany Joh and sophomore Sydnee Michaels each shot a 2-under 69 for UCLA, as the Bruins took a one-stroke lead on the first day of the Pacific-10 Conference Women's Golf Championship at Palos Verdes Golf Club. Senior Paloa Moreno of USC was the only other golfer to finish under par, shooting a 1-under 70 despite a double bogey on 18. "She's been struggling a bit with her game, so I'm happy she put it together," USC Coach Andrea Gaston said. The cross-town rivals benefited from early tee times, quick greens and familiarity with the course. "[The greens were] a little bit softer than we remembered. It was pretty score-able, almost like playing on your home course," Joh said. UCLA shot an even-par 284, one stroke ahead of USC (1-over 285) and 12 better than Arizona State (12-over 296). Oregon is a surprising fourth, as freshman Kendra Little finished at par and is one of three golfers tied for fourth. Arizona and California are tied for fifth place. The 22nd Pac-10 Championship continues tomorrow and Wednesday at Palos Verdes Golf Club, a par 71, 6,000-yard layout. Tee times begin at 8 a.m. PDT both days.
