Ojai, Calif. -- The L.A. schools put on a show in the Men's Singles Tournament, while the top players in the Conference showed their strength on the women's side as the Pac-10 Tennis Championships opened Thursday.
On the men's side both USC and UCLA's individuals continued their strong play which has led them to top-10 rankings as teams. The Trojans advanced four players to the quarterfinals, making up half of the field, the Bruins will send three on and the field is rounded out by Pedro Zerbini from California.
USC's Robert Farah, the No. 1 seed and No. 6 ranked player in the country, cruised through his first two match defeating Arizona's Peter Zimmer (6-3, 6-4), but was tested in the second as he was taken three sets before defeating UCLA's Michael Look (6-4, 3-6, 6-2).
"I had a pretty good day on a great day for tennis here in Ojai." Farah said. "My second match was tough and Look played a very good match, but I feel strong and am looking forward to a good match tomorrow."
Trojan teammates Kaes Van't Hof, Jaak Poldma and Gary Sacks also advanced.
Van't Hof, ranked No. 34, was expected to advance this far, but the other two were a bit of a surprise. Poldma upset No. 4 seeded Claudio Christen of Arizona, 6-3, 6-4 while Sacks rolled through Oregon's Francisco Gallardo in the second round 7-6(7), 6-4. Gallardo had earlier upset No. 6 seeded Patrik Fischer of Washington.
"It seems like we've been battling UCLA a lot this year, but any time we get a chance to go against them we savor it." USC Head Coach Peter Smith said. "They have a bunch of tough competitors over there and their lower guys have stepped up."
On the women's side the action went right along the seedings as six of the eight seeded players advanced to the quarterfinals. California's Susie Babos, seeded fifth, was the highest seed to fall in the second round as she went down in three sets to USC's Gabriela Niculescu, 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-2.
Arizona State's Kelcy McKenna, the No. 6 seed, also fell in her second round match against California's Claire Ilcinkas, 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-4.
Top-seeded Hilary Barte of Stanford cruised through her first match, defeating Washington State's Alexandra Stefanova 6-2, 6-1 and rolled through California's Bojana Bobusic 6-3, 6-3 on her way to the quarterfinals.
Second seeded Amanda Fink of USC rolled through her matches without dropping a set as she defeated Oregon's Anna Powaska in the first round and Arizona's Danielle Steinberg in the second by identical 6-2, 6-2 scores.
Marina Cossou of Cal, the tournament's third seed, rolled through her first match against Washington's Aleksandra Malovic, 6-2, 6-1, but was taken to three sets by Oregon's Celine Rolly in her second round match before prevailing 7-5, 6-7 (3), 6-4.
With neither defending champion returning, the field on both the men's and women's sides appears wide open.
Quarterfinals matches will take place Friday in between the doubles matches which dominate play during the day, beginning at 9 a.m.
