Irvine, Calif. - The Big West Conference announced April 29 that Pacific men's tennis coach Guido Baumann has been named the Big West Co-Coach of the Year, freshman David Gonzalez (Guayaquil, Ecuador) has been named the conference's freshman of the year, and that Gonzalez and Moritz Starke (Bamberg, Germany) have earned first team singles honors for their play over the course of the 2008 season.
Gonzalez, who was named freshman of the year and earned first team singles honors, finished his first spring season with the team with an overall singles record of 15-6 as he played a majority of his matches at the No. 2 position. Starke, who was the team's other first team selection and was last year's conference player of the year, finished his singles season with a record of 13-7. The two also teamed up in doubles play as they earned second team doubles honors together as well.
Baumann shared this year's Co-Coach of the Year award with UCSB's Marty Davis as it was the fourth time the Tiger coach has earned the honor in his 11 seasons with the team. This season Baumann led the Tigers to the championship match of the Big West Tournament for the seventh time in the last eight years. The Tigers finished the season with an overall mark of 11-12 as they fell to UCSB in the championship match of the Big West Tournament after finishing the regular season in third place in the Big West Conference.
Also earning honors for their 2008 performances for the Tigers were Renan Delsin (Santa Cruz da Conceiacao) and Artem Gramma (Krivoj Rog, Ukraine). Delsin earned second team singles honors as he finished the year with a singles record of 15-8 at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, while Gramma received honorable mention honors after turning in an 11-11 mark on the season in singles play at a combination of the top four spots.
