Katie Griffin knew a long time ago that she wanted to attend the Naval Academy. She was also determined to be a member of the diving team.
It was some of her closest supporters who weren't so sure that was the best plan for the Ellicott City native. Even her mother expressed reservations about her daughter giving up softball to focus on diving.
"My track coach said 'nobody will ever recruit you for diving,' " Griffin recalled this week. "But I was like, well, I like diving a lot better. It was something that, once I got started, I really liked it."
