2008 Patriot League Men's Tennis Championship Page

Hamilton, N.Y. - The 2008 Patriot League Men's Tennis Championship got things underway on Friday with three quarterfinal matches. No. 5 Lafayette got the morning started with a 4-3 upset victory over No. 4 seed and host Colgate. No. 3 Bucknell took care of business with a 5-1 victory over No. 6 Lehigh, while No. 2 Army pulled off a sweep with a 4-0 win over No. 7 Holy Cross. All three teams join No. 1 Navy in tomorrow morning's semifinals.

It was a picture-perfect day for tennis as six of the seven League teams took to the court for the quarterfinal round of this year's tournament. No. 5 Lafayette used a strong performance in the doubles portion of the match to propel them to a gritty 4-3 victory against No. 4 seed and host Colgate. Eric Wiley and James Murphy earned the victory at No. 2 doubles, while Kyle MacLelland and Matt McGranaghan pulled out the win at No. 3 doubles. Colgate's Martin MacIntyre and Tyler Deck earned the lone victory for Colgate at No. 1 doubles. In the singles matches, James Murphy got things off to a great start for the Leopards, winning in straight sets at the No. 6 position. Also picking up singles victories for the `Pards was Justin Haar at No. 4 singles, while senior Brett Kraft pulled out a gutsy victory at No. 2 singles to close out the match for Lafayette. The Leopards will advance to tomorrow's semifinal round, where they will meet No. 1 Navy in a match slated to start at 10 a.m.

In the second quarterfinal match of the day, No. 3 Bucknell swept No. 6 Lehigh in convincing fashion. The Bison got off to a great start in the match by sweeping the doubles point with scores of 8-3, 8-6 and 8-6. Ira Reibeisen, Zach Hascoe, Mark Malloy and Dan Bednarek each earned singles victories for the Bison as well. Lehigh's Troy List, the No. 2 singles player for the Mountain Hawks, was the lone Lehigh player to pick up a point in the match with his victory.

In the final match of the day, No. 2 Army jumped out to a large lead over No. 7 Holy Cross and never looked back. The doubles pairing of Phil Muhawi and Eddie Kang and the pairing of Johnny Lucero and Bruno Lucivero each picked up 8-0 victories in doubles play. In the singles competition, Muhawi, Lucero and Josh Krieter were victorious, the final two by 6-0, 6-0 sweeps. The Black Knights advance to tomorrow's semifinals against Bucknell.

Tomorrow's semifinal matchups will take place simultaneously at the Joseph Abrahamson Tennis Courts. Doubles play will start at 9 a.m. while singles play will begin at approximately 10 a.m.
