Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Release - 2.12.08

Army took home three weekly awards for the second-consecutive week following a strong showing at the Valentine Invite in Boston. Matt Tower and Lesa Boyd earned track athletes of the week, while Domonick Sylve was rookie of the week. Lafayette's Ashley Harbin (field) and Janica Ausin (rookie), along with Bucknell's Timothy Medlock (field), also earned awards.

M-F Athletic Male Track Performer of the Week
Matt Tower, Army Sr., Stillwater, Okla.

Tower turned in one of the most impressive individual performances of the 2007-08 season in the Patriot League this past weekend at the St. Valentine Invite in Boston. The senior finished first in the 500m with a time of 1:03.35, and fifth in the 1000m in a time of 2:26.58. Tower also ran the 800m leg of the DMR, which Army won in a time of 9:48.60. All three of those times were IC4A-qualifying marks, as was Tower's time of 1:49.43 in his leg of the DMR.

M-F Athletic Female Track Performer of the Week
Lesa Boyd, Army So., Lexington, Ky.

Boyd earned her first weekly award after her strong performance at the St. Valentine Invite in Boston last weekend. The sophomore finished fifth of 168 in the 200m, recording a time of 24.85. Her time was the first sub-25 second mark in the Patriot League this season, and was good enough to reach the ECAC standard in the event.

M-F Athletic Male Field Performer of the Week
Timothy Medlock, Bucknell So., Evan Mills, N.Y.

Medlock finished first in the shot put at the Bucknell Winter Classic last weekend, reaching an IC4A distance of 16.00m. The distance was a career best, and is second on Bucknell's all-time list. He also finished eighth in the weight throw, with a distance of 14.58.

M-F Athletic Female Field Performer of the Week
Ashley Harbin, Lafayette Sr., Clarksville, Tenn.

Harbin earned her fourth award of the season after a very impressive showing at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational last weekend. Thrust into competition with some of the top-ranked throwers in the nation, Harbin finished second in the weight throw with an ECAC distance of 19.42m. She currently is ranked ninth in the nation in the event.

M-F Athletic Male Rookie of the Week
Domonick Sylve, Army Fr., Long Beach, Calif.

Sylve qualified for the finals in the 55m finals at last weekend's St. Valentine Invite, turning in an IC4A-qualifying time of 7.70 seconds in the process. The time was a personal best for Sylve.

M-F Athletic Female Rookie of the Week
Janica Austin, Lafayette Fr., Trenton, N.J.

Austin had an impressive showing at the New Balance Collegiate Invite last weekend. She finished 19th in the 60m-hurdles in a time of 8.69 seconds, which was both a school record and an ECAC-qualifying mark. Austin also broke a school record in the 200m dash, which she ran in a time of 25.51 seconds.

Honorable Mention

Stacey Marion, Colgate
Fr., West Simsbury, Conn.
Marion ran the 5000m in a time of 17:22.14, which is a Colgate freshman record, as well as an ECAC-qualifying mark in the event.

Amanda Mockbee, Bucknell
Sr., Hudson, Ohio
Mockbee won the weight throw at the Bucknell Winter Classic, reaching an ECAC-qualifying distance of 16.75m. The distance was also good enough for second in school history in the event.

Lyle Tolli, Colgate
So., Lockport, N.Y.
Tolli posted the fastest mile time in the Patriot League when he ran a 4:06.36 at the Valentine Invite last weekend. The time also reached the IC4A standard.

NCAA Provisional Marks
Three Patriot League student-athletes have reached NCAA Provisional-qualifying marks so far during the 2007-08 indoor track and field season, as of 2.10.08. They are:
- Paul Harris, Navy - 800m (1:49.29)
- Ashley Harbin, Lafayette - Weight Throw (20.17m)
- Jacqui Charnigo, Navy - Pole Vault (3.95m)

Navy's Harris Still Among NCAA Leaders
Navy senior Paul Harris currently holds the nation's second fastest 800m time so far this season. His time of 1:49.29 at the Penn State National Open places him at No. 3 on the list, trailing Alex McClary of Arkansas and Jacob Hernandez of Texas. McClary ran the 800m in a time of 1:49.28, while Hernandez bested it this weekend at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational with a time of 1:49.25.

The Finish Line is Approaching...
The 2008 Patriot League Championship Meet will be held Fri., Feb. 22 through Sun., Feb. 24 at Bucknell's Gerhard Fieldhouse.

Team Notebooks

American
The Eagles sent runners to the New Balance Collegiate Invitational last weekend, and had several outstanding performances. Senior Steve Hallinan won the college division of the one mile run, while teammate Brian McCabe finished second in the same race. Freshman Colin Eustis placed 23rd in the 3000m run as well. For the women, Cathleen Ford finished ninth in the one mile run, in a time of 5:01.95, which is tops in the Patriot League so far this season.

Army
The Black Knights traveled up to Boston for the Valentine Invite last weekend, and had a remarkable individual effort from senior Matt Tower. Tower finished first of 66 in the 500m in a time of 1:03.35, and also ran the 800m leg of the DMR, which Army won in a time of 9:48.60. Both of those were IC4A times, as was his time of 2:26.58 in the 1000m run. Joining Tower with IC4A/ECAC standards were Lesa Boyd (200m) and Domonick Sylve (55m hurdles). Boyd ran the first sub-25 second 200m in the Patriot League this season (24.85).

Bucknell
The Bison hosted the Bucknell Winter Classic to close out the regular season last weekend. Senior Wallace Campbell placed first in the mile run in an IC4A-qualifying time of 4:09.26 to lead the men in the non-scoring event. Also posting qualifying standards were Timothy Medlock (shot put), Amanda Mockbee (weight throw) and Nicholas Hruch (high jump). Medlock (16.00m) and Mockbee (16.75m) each reached a distance that placed them second on Bucknell's all-time list in their respective events.

Colgate
The Raiders made the trek to Boston last weekend for the Valentine Invite. Top performances for the Raiders were turned in by Lyle Tolli for the men and Stacey Marion for the women. Tolli placed third in the mile with an IC4A-qualifying time of 4:06.36, which was just two seconds off the NCAA Provisional mark. Marion placed seventh in the 5000m race in a time of 17:22.14, which was a Colgate freshman record and an ECAC-qualifying mark.

Holy Cross
The Crusaders also competed at the Valentine Invite last weekend. Junior Lesley Bautista placed seventh in the pole vault, reaching an ECAC height of 3.60m . Junior Sebastian Fidelus (500m) and sophomore Olivia Pruszko (400m) each broke school records in their respective events. Fidelus ran the 500m in a time of 1:05.61 for a 15th-place finish, while Pruszko finished 17th in the 400m with a time of 57.64.

Lafayette
The Leopards sent runners to the New Balance Collegiate Invitational last weekend. The men were led by senior Alex Wechsler, who finished 20th in the mile with a time of 4:15.25. The women were led in the track events by freshman Janica Austin and in the field events by senior Ashley Harbin. Austin broke school records in the 60m-hurdles (8.69 seconds) as well as the 200m dash (25.51 seconds). Harbin continued her success in the weight throw competition, as she finished second with a distance of 19.42m against a field that consisted of some of the top throwers in the nation.

Lehigh
The Mountain Hawks traveled to New York City for the New Balance Collegiate Invitational last weekend. Leading the Lehigh men was senior Kyle Manning who ran a career-best, IC4A-qualifying time of 2:29.04 to place 21st in the 1000m. Freshman Dan McClimon finished the 3000m in 8:28.49, good enough for 13th place and an IC4A standard.

Navy
The Mids were idle from competition last week, and return to action with the men traveling to Iowa State and the women hosting Loyola (Md.) this week.
