Annapolis, Md. - The first day of competition at the 2008 Patriot League Outdoor Track and Field Championships is in the books. After one day of competition it is the Navy men and the Bucknell women who find themselves in first place. Festivities will continue tomorrow morning, with the awards ceremonies starting at approximately 5 p.m. tomorrow night.

Six events were decided in both the men's and women's competition on Friday, including the hammer throw, javelin, pole vault, long jump, 10,000m and 4x800m relay. In the hammer throw competition on the men's side, Navy's Mark Van Orden won the title with a distance of 58.36m. Holy Cross's Stephen Mandravelis finished as the runner up with a distance of 52.03m. The women's hammer throw was no contest, as Lafayette senior Ashley Harbin won by close to 10m to repeat as champion in the event. She reached a distance of 60.56m, while teammate Andrea Cerbie came in second with a throw of 50.79m.

The men's javelin competition also went to the Mids, as Bo Lawson won the event with a throw of 60.85m. Lehigh's James Pachucki came in second, reaching a distance of 57.30m. The women's javelin produced a 1-2 Bucknell sweep, as senior Beverly Rogers earned the title with a throw of 44.72m, while freshman Laura Rycek came in a close second with 44.36m.

The men's and women's pole vault competition produced a mirror image in the results column, as Navy earned the title and Bucknell the runner-up position in each. For the men, it was Kraegan Bramer who won with a height of 4.80m, while Bucknell's David Mante placed second with a height of 4.65m. Senior Jacqui Charnigo won the women's pole vault with a height of 3.75m, while Bucknell's Rebecca Frey earned a second-place finish with a height of 3.65m.
 

 

Navy's Ronald Belany ran away with the men's long jump competition, winning by close to 0.40m. Belany jumped to a distance of 7.40m, a season-best for the senior, while Army's Alfred McDaniel placed second with a distance of 7.04m. The women's long jump competition went to Lafayette's Jessica Buzzell with a jump of 5.68m, while Bucknell's Jennifer Pierce finished a close second with 5.64m.

The only individual track competition to hand out points yesterday was the 10,000m race, which was swept by the Black Knights of Army. In the men's race it was Jon Anderson who won with a time of 31:05.83 and Bucknell's Wallace Campbell who finished second in a time of 31:09.35. The women's race was won by Army's Meghan Curran in a time of 37:31.22, while Navy's Amy Watson placed second in a time of 38:16.53.

The final competition to reach a conclusion on the first day was the men's and women's 4x800m relay. The American team consisting of Steve Hallinan, Conor Sullivan, Brendan Fennell and Carlos Jamieson defended their title with a time of 7:29.49. Colgate placed second in the men's race with a time of 7:30.64. The women's race was won by the Lehigh team of Shannon Alejandro, Sarah Serwo, Kimberly Scotto and Jennifer Therkorn in a time of 8:54.33. Bucknell grabbed second place with a time of 8:59.42.
