Army Named CollegeBaseballInsider National Team of the Week

April 18, 2008

From Army Athletic Communications

WEST POINT, N.Y. - On the strength of a historical four-game sweep of archrival Navy, Army was named Collegebaseballinsider.com national Team of the Week on Thursday.

The Black Knights, who registered a perfect 6-0 showing last week, defeated Iona and Manhattan in non-league action, then swept a four-game Patriot League series versus Navy in Annapolis, Md. The Midshipmen entered their meeting with Army resting in first place in the Patriot League standings, but saw the Black Knights vault over them on their way to earning a share of first place with Bucknell and Holy Cross.

Army completed only the second-ever four-game sweep in Army-Navy series history (the Black Knights registered the first in 2005) over the weekend. The Black Knights ran their overall winning streak to a season-best seven games and extended their victory string at Navy's Max Bishop Stadium to eight games. That marks the longest winning streak by either team on the other's home field in the 108-year history of the fabled series. Army's overall winning streak against Navy now stands at seven games. The Black Knights have captured 18 of the last 21 meetings between the schools dating back to 2004 and outscored the Mids by a 33-10 margin during the quartet of victories last weekend.

Army joins an esteemed grouping of teams to earn Collegebaseballinsider.com Team of the Week honor this season. The list includes Georgia, Southern Miss, Missouri, Kentucky and Rice.

The Black Knights return to Patriot League action this weekend, hosting Lehigh in a crucial four-series at Doubleday Field. Doubleheaders are scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday, with Saturday's twinbill slated to begin at noon. Audio streams and live statistics will be available for all four games at www.goARMYsports.com. In addition, the Army Athletic Association will provide video streaming coverage and a live blog of Sunday's activities.
