Few outside American's basketball program could have predicted its success this season, and early in Wednesday's Patriot League quarterfinal game, a comeback seemed almost as improbable.
But many winning ingredients were there from the start. The Eagles knew what they had with coach Jeff Jones, who led Virginia to the NCAA tournament five times in the 1990s. But AU's stellar guards, Garrison Carr and Derrick Mercer, have sparked its on-court improvement.
Carr and Mercer have supplied much of the veteran leadership for the regular-season Patriot League champions, and they were the catalysts for AU's comeback against Holy Cross that set up today's semifinal game against fifth-seeded Army.
