2007-08 Patriot League Women's Basketball Major Awards 
Center Valley, Pa. - The Patriot League's 2007-08 Women's Basketball Major Awards went to American, Army, Holy Cross and Navy. Holy Cross' Briana McFadden was named the Patriot League Player of the Year. Army's Margaree King took home Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year honors. The Patriot League Rookie of the Year went to Navy's Cassie Consedine. Rounding out the major awards was American's Melissa McFerrin, who was tabbed the Patriot League Coach of the Year.
McFadden scored 14.3 points per game in League action to tie for second among Patriot League players. The sophomore guard reached double-figure scoring in 23 games this season and came up with 20 or more points three times. The Wheaton, Md., native led the Crusader squad in scoring 15 times this year. The First-Team All-Patriot League selection was first in the League in free throw percentage at a .809 mark and sixth in three-point field goal percentage (.369). This year marks the 10th time a Holy Cross student-athlete was named the Patriot League Player of the Year and the first time since the 1999-2000 season.
King is a key member of an Army defense that ranks second in the Patriot League in scoring defense (55.7). The Black Knights held eight of their opponents this season to under 50 points. The guard from Jackson, Miss., appeared in 23 games as a senior and recorded 13 steals. King's award Defensive Player of the Year award is the first for an Army student-athlete. The award was created for the 2004-05 season.
Consedine tied for second in scoring at a 14.3 per game clip over the League's 14-game schedule. Consedine led the Patriot League in rebounding with 8.5 per outing and ranked second in blocks per game (2.46). The freshman center recorded a League-best 12 double-doubles this season. She reached double-figure scoring in 26 games this season, including a current streak of 20-straight contests. She was honored as both an All-Rookie selection and a member of the Second-Team All-Patriot League squad. The Bartlesville, Okla., product joins three other Mids as a Patriot League Rookie of the Year selection and is the first since the 1995-96 campaign.
For the first time in her career, McFerrin was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year after leading American to its first-ever number one seed in the Patriot League Tournament with an 11-3 record in League games. She guided the Eagles to a 17-12 overall mark during the regular season, which includes a current win streak of 10 games. The Eagles became just the third team in League history to go undefeated on the road in Patriot League play at 7-0. The 11 Patriot League wins are the most for the Eagles since joining the Patriot League in 2001 and the 17 overall victories are the most in the McFerrin era.
The 2008 Patriot League Women's Basketball Tournament will kick off on Saturday, March 8 with quarterfinal action and continue on Sunday, March 9 with semifinal games, all at Army's Chistl Arena. The 2008 Patriot League Tournament Championship game will take place on Wednesday, March 12 at the site of the highest remaining seed and will be broadcast on ESPNU at 6 p.m. The quarterfinal and semifinal games will be available through the Patriot League's All-Access package.
