Plutecki Sets War Memorial Pool Record

BLACKSBURG, Va.--Junior Adam Plutecki set a War Memorial Pool record, as the men's swimming and diving team dropped a 177-117 decision to Virginia Tech this afternoon. The Panthers fall to 6-3 on the season.

Plutecki (Zielona Gora, Poland/Zielona Gora) won the 100 breast with a pool record of 55.49, which surpassed the previous mark of 55.75. Senior Warren Barnes (Pickering, Ont./Dunbarton) trailed Plutecki for second in the 100 breast.

Later the duo also took first and second in the 200 breast. Senior Jared Martin (Richmond, Va./Nova) rounded out the top three with a time of 2:12.80 in the same event.

Plutecki would go on to win the 200 IM at 1:52.28, while Martin placed third.

The Panthers earned another first-place finish when freshman Andrzej Dubiel (Dzierzoniow, Poland/School of Sport Championship) won the 200 back (1:52.02). Later Dubiel placed second in the 100 back (50.79), while freshman Alex McLaren (North Seanich, B.C./Stellys Secondary) took third in the 200 back.

The final top finish was turned in by senior Chris George (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School) in the 500 free at 4:52.16 for the Panthers. This was after placing third in the 1000 free earlier in the meet.

Pitt's diving duo of junior Alex Volovetski (Brandon, Fla./Armwood) and senior Jeremy Stultz (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) finished second and third, respectively, on both boards.

 

 

Another key third-place finish included the 200 medley relay team of Dubiel, Barnes, Plutecki and junior Patrick Mansfield (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne).

The Panthers face Virginia in Charlottesville at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
