Several Panthers Garner Top Performances

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-Pitt garnered six first-place finishes against Virginia, however, the women's swimming and diving team fell 157-136 at the Aquatics and Fitness Center. The Panthers fall to 7-3 on the season. Sophomore Margo Ekstrom (Erie, Pa./McDowell) won the 1M board with 274.43 points, while freshman Morgan Speece (Reading, Pa./Wilson) finished third. Later on the 3M board, Pitt swept the top three as junior Sabrina Jennings (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial), sophomore Alyssa Ferraro (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) and Speece all placed respectively in the event. Junior Stacie Safritt (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) led the swimmers as she won the 100 free and was second in the 50 and 200 freestyle events. Another Panther placing in the top-three in multiple events was freshman Cookie McIntyre (York, Pa./West York Area), who won the 200 IM and earned silver in the 200 fly (2:03.15) and the 200 breast (2:20.26). Senior Brittany Stevens (Peachtree City, Ga./Starr's Mill/Florida State) won the 100 fly, while junior Agnes Mago (Kecskmet, Hungary/Bolyai Janos/Radford) trailed for second.
Mago was later a member of the winning 200 free relay team that touched at 1:34.62. The rest of the squad was made up of senior Kelly O'Hara (Voorhees, N.J./Timber Creek), sophomore Megan Sculley (Sinking Springs, Pa./Wilson/William and Mary) and Safritt. Junior Ruth Seiffert (Boothwyn, Pa./Garnet Valley) recorded a second-place finish in the meet, when she stopped the clock of the 100 breast at 1:07.02. Freshman Laura Barnes (Pickering, Ont./Dunbarton) took third in the same event. Finishing with key third-place times were sophomore Ryann Kishbaugh (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) in the 100 back (58.13) and 200 back (2:07.61) and the 200 medley relay team of Kishbaugh, McIntyre, Mago and Sculley. The Panthers will honor their seniors on Saturday, Feb. 2, hosting Clarion, CMU, Dennison and Duquesne at 11 a.m. |
