Volovetski Earns 1M Diving Crown

EAST MEADOW, N.Y.-- Junior Alex Volovetski wins the 1M diving events, as the University of Pittsburgh men's swimming and diving team improved to third with 166.5 points on the second day of the Big East Championships held in Nassau County Aquatics Center.

Volovetski (Brandon, Fla./Armwood) repeats as the Big East Champion on the 1M board with 376.85 points in the finals. Volovetski becomes the fourth Panther to repeat in the 1M diving event and first since teammate Jeremy Stultz (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) in 2005 & 2006.

In the same event, Stultz scored 318.15 points for fourth place.

Improving from prelims, junior Adam Plutecki (Zielona Gora, Poland/Zielona Gora) finished fourth in the 200 IM at 1:49.55. Additionally, senior Warren Barnes (Pickering, Ont./Dunbarton) placed seventh (1:51.73) in the same event.

In the consolation heat of the 200 IM, senior Jared Martin (Richmond, Va./Nova) placed 12th overall at 1:52.52.

Freshman Andrzej Dubiel (Dzierzoniow, Poland/School of Sport Championships) improved to sixth in the finals of the 50 free with a personal best of 20.72, while junior Patrick Mansfield (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) placed 16th at 21.45 in the consolation heat.

 

 

Seniors Chris George (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School) and Steve Jackson (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) finished 14th and 16th, respectively, in the 500 free tonight.

In the final event of the night, the 200 free relay claimed third at 1:22.19. The team was made up of Dubiel, Plutecki, Mansfield and junior Andrew Burkey (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area).

Friday's prelims include the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and women's 3M diving.
