Volovetski Sweeps Diving Events
Feb. 23, 2008 EAST MEADOW, N.Y.-- Junior Alex Volovetski earned the Most Outstanding Diver Award and Assistant Head Coach for Diving Julian Krug garnered the Men's Diving Coach of the Year Award, as the men's swimming and diving team finishes third with 436 points at the Big East Championships held in Nassau County Aquatics Center. Volovetski (Brandon, Fla./Armwood) won the Most Outstanding Diver Award for the first time in his career, sweeping the 1M and 3M boards. He becomes the second diver on the current roster to achieve this accomplishment, as Pitt has earned the Most Outstanding Diver each of the last four years. Volovetski won the 3M this evening with a score of 381.55 points. Teammate Jeremy Stultz (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) was the last to sweep the diving events in the 2006, as he placed fourth on the 3M board tonight with 364.5 points. Freshmen Collin Forner (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) and Jason Erdeljac (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) rounded out the top eight with 281.80 and 275.45, respectively. Krug garnered the Men's Diving Coach of the Year Award after Volovetski swept the diving events and four Panthers scored in the top eight of the 3M board. This is Krug's fourth honor from the conference meet in the last seven seasons. Pushing the limit one more time in the pool, junior Adam Plutecki (Zielona Gora, Poland/Zielona Gora) finished second in the 200 breast at 1:58.32 for the best time of the season and a NCAA `B' cut mark. Slightly behind him, senior Warren Barnes (Pickering, Ont./Dunbarton) improved upon his fourth-place finish last season in the 200 breast, placing third with a NCAA provisional mark of 1:58.46.
Swimming in the 200 breast consolation, senior Jared Martin (Richmond, Va./Nova) claimed a 14th-place finish at 2:05.87, while junior B.J. Conklyn (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) touched 16th at 2:08.42. In a tight consolation heat of the 200 back, senior Steve Jackson (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) was edged out by several hundredths of a second for third in the heat and 11th overall at 1:50.52. Swimming in the same race, freshman Andrzej Dubiel (Dzierzoniow, Poland/School of Sport Championships) placed 12th at 1:50.56, while classmate Alex McLaren (North Saanich, B.C./Stellys Secondary) touched at 1:52.44 for 15th. Senior Scott Shearer (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny) recorded a 13th-place finish in the 1650 free, while junior Patrick Mansfield (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) tied a 14th in the 100 free at 46.67. In the 200 fly, junior Andrew Kyrejko (West Orange, N.J./The Montclair Kimberly Academy) placed 12th, while senior Chris George (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School) improved to 13th for the Panthers. In the final event of the night, Pitt's 400 free relay took sixth at 3:04.67. The squad was made up of Dubiel, Plutecki, Mansfield and Jackson. Scores |
