Six Panthers Earn Top Finishes In Meet

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.--Six Panthers earn first-place finishes, however the men's swimming and diving team fell 159-132 at the Aquatics and Fitness Center, this afternoon. Pitt falls to 6-4 on the season. Freshman Andrzej Dubiel (Dzierzoniow, Poland/School of Sport Championship) and juniors Patrick Mansfield (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne), Andy Burkey (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) and Adam Plutecki (Zielona Gora, Poland/Zielona Gora) teamed on the winning 200 free relay team that touched the wall at 1:24.86 to end the meet. Earlier in the meet, Plutecki won the 200 IM (1:51.01), while Dubiel was second in the 200 back (1:51.64) and third in the 50 free (21.40). Mansfield also earned an individual top-three finish, when he placed third in the 100 free (47.01). Garnering two individual top finishes was senior Warren Barnes (Pickering, Ont./Dunbarton), who won the 100 and 200 breaststroke events with times of 55.53 and 2:01.93, respectively. Junior Alex Volovetski (Brandon, Fla./Armwood) returned to the top with a first-place finish on the 1M board, while senior Jeremy Stultz (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) was second. Later Stultz was victorious on the 3M board, while Volovetski and freshman Jason Erdeljac (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) trailed for the sweep.
Freshman Geoff Morgan (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall Central) rounded out the first-place finishes when he touched the wall at 52.16 in the 100 fly. The 200 medley relay team of Dubiel, Plutecki, Burkey and Mansfield took second at 1:32.62 to open swimming events. The Panthers will honor their seniors on Saturday, Feb. 2, hosting Clarion, CMU, Dennison and Duquesne at 11 a.m. |
