Swimming and Diving Honors Six

Jan. 28, 2008

PITTSBURGH--Head swimming and diving coach Chuck Knoles honored several Panthers as `Performers of the Meet' for their contributions to last weekend's meets on the road. These swimmers are selected by their peers at the end of the meet in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the team.

In the Panthers meet against Virginia Tech, the women selected junior Agnes Mago (Kecskemet, Hungary/Radford), who continues to have an outstanding season for the Panthers. Individually, she earned first in the 200 fly and 500 free and placed third in the 200 IM. She then ended the meet as the anchor of the winning 400 free relay team.

On the men's side, junior Adam Plutecki (Zielona Gora, Poland/Zielona Gora) earned the nod for swimmer of the meet. He set a War Memorial Pool record in the 100 breast and also won the 200 breast and 200 IM events.

The following day the Panthers were undecided on one individual since there were several outstanding performances for the women against Virginia. Selected to share the Performer of the Week honor were freshmen Emily DeStefano (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield Township) and Cookie McIntyre (York, Pa./West York) and sophomore Margo Ekstrom (Erie, Pa./McDowell).

DeStefano had an outstanding meet swimming to collegiate bests in the 50 free, 100 free and a 50 free anchor split on the medley relay. Ekstrom did a tremendous job diving, as she won the 3M board and qualified for the NCAA Zones. McIntrye rounded out the outstanding performances by swimming lifetime bests in both the 200 fly and 200 breast, earning second-place performances in both.

The men's diving corps continued to do a phenomenal job and earned Performer of the Meet honors again, as senior Jeremy Stultz (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) won the 3M board in a record shattering fashion. Stultz recorded 409.73 points to set Virginia's pool record by more than 10 points, becoming the first male diver to ever score over a 400 in Charlottesville.

The Panthers return to action at Trees Pool this Saturday, Feb. 2, as they recognize this year's senior class. The Panthers face local rivals Clarion and Duquesne, as well as Carnegie Mellon's men and Denison. Action will begin with diving at 11am.
