Feb. 2, 2008
PITTSBURGH--The Panthers swept four events, as the men's swimming and diving team topped CMU (193-87), Clarion (200-74), Denison (199-83) and Duquesne (183.5-86.5) on Alumni Day in Pitt's 2007-08 home finale at Trees Pool. The Panthers set the tone early with their strongest event, diving. Junior Alex Volovetski (Brandon, Fla./Armwood), senior Jeremy Stultz (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and freshman Colin Forner (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) swept the 1M board, while Stultz, Forner and freshman Charlie Hauser (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) swept the 3M event. Next, Pitt swept the 200 fly as senior Chris George (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School), junior Andrew Kyrejko (West Orange, N.J./The Montclair Kimberly Academy) and sophomore Geoff Morgan (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall Central) led the pack. George touched the wall at 1:54.33. The final sweep was in the 200 back, as freshman Andrzej Dubiel (Dzierzoniow, Poland/School of Sports Championships), junior Jon Buchanan (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek), and senior Steve Jackson (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Township) led the way. Dubiel also won the 100 back, individually, and led the 200 medley relay team of senior Warren Barnes (Pickering, Ont./Dunbarton) and juniors Andrew Burkey (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) and Patrick Mansfield (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) to a win with a time of 1:33.15.
Additionally, Barnes won the 100 breast (55.08) and the 200 breast at 2:09.28. Morgan won the 100 fly, while Mansfield edged out Denison's Lowell Byers in the 50 free. Later junior Adam Plutecki (Zielona Gora, Poland/Zielona Gora) outlasted Mansfield in the 100 free, as both touched for first and second for Pitt. In the final event of the day, Dubiel, Kyrejko, Mansfield and Plutecki won the 400 free relay. The Panthers return to action on Feb. 20, as they look to earn the Big East title at the conference meet in Long Island, N.Y. Team Scores |
