Football Writers Association Honors McCoy and Romeus
Jan. 9, 2008
PITTSBURGH--Pitt tailback LeSean McCoy and defensive end Greg Romeus have been named to the 28-member Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) Freshman All-America Team. The team was selected by a voting panel led by FWAA vice president Mike Griffith of the Knoxville News-Sentinel. True freshmen and redshirt freshmen were eligible for consideration. This is the latest honor for McCoy and Romeus, who have been widely heralded as two of the country's top newcomers this year.
McCoy was the nation's top freshman rusher with 110.67 yards per game -- eight yards better than the second-leading frosh (Georgia's Knowshon Moreno, 102.62 yds./game). Among all rushers, McCoy finished 21st nationally and second in the Big East. The Harrisburg native enjoyed the most prolific season by a Pitt freshman running back since the legendary Tony Dorsett. McCoy set Pitt freshman records for points (90) and rushing touchdowns (14), surpassing Dorsett's 34-year-old marks (78 points, 13 rushing TDs in 1973). A product of Bishop McDevitt High and Milford Academy (N.Y.), McCoy was additionally selected first team All-Big East and the 2007 Big East Rookie of the Year by the league's coaches. Romeus, who hails from Coral Springs, Fla., was a highly productive performer for Pitt, which ranked fifth nationally in total defense (297.67 yds./game). The redshirt frosh finished second on the team with 11.5 tackles for loss and ranked second with four quarterback sacks. Romeus had 41 tackles overall. Incredibly, the 2007 season marked only the third year of organized football for Romeus. He first played the game as a high school senior at Coral Glades. As a redshirt in 2006, Romeus was selected Pitt's Defensive Scout Team Player of the Year. --30-- |
