July 18, 2008
PITTSBURGH - Pitt women’s basketball assistant coach Caroline McCombs is set to be inducted into the Youngstown State Athletics Hall of Fame this fall. The ceremony will take place Oct. 25, prior to the YSU Homecoming game. “It is an honor to be recognized by my alma mater,” McCombs said. “My time as a player at Youngstown State helped to mold me into the coach that I am today and I will be forever grateful for the opportunities they gave me.” McCombs, a native of Medina, Ohio, was a standout for the Penguins from 1994-98, helping lead the team to three conference titles and two NCAA Tournament appearances, including an upset of No. 5 seed Memphis in the first round in 1998. She finished her career ranking sixth overall in points scored (1,577), fourth in assists (493), sixth in steals (236) and holds the school record with 112 career starts. The Pitt assistant is entering her fourth season with the Panthers, where she spearheads the recruiting efforts of the program. McCombs has been instrumental in Pitt’s surge into the national spotlight, including its first-ever Sweet 16 appearance last season. McCombs joins seven others in the class of 2008, including three of her women’s basketball teammates during her time with the Penguins.
