Softball Blanks Akron On The Road

PITTSBURGH--Freshman Cory Berliner earned her 10th win of the season in a shutout over Akron, 10-0, this afternoon, in the first game of a doubleheader at Lee Jackson Field. The Panthers improved to 16-12, while the Zips slipped to 10-21 on the year. Berliner (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) improved to 10-5 on the year and is now tied for fourth on the single-season wins list. She tallied eight strikeouts in the contest and boasts 100 on the season. Berliner held Akron to just two hits through the fifth inning, before giving up a total of five hits in the game. Junior Samantha Card (Miami, Fla./Our Lady of Lourdes/Florida International) smacked her career-high seventh homer of the season in the third inning, giving the Panthers a 5-0 lead. Freshman Ashley Amistade (Washington, Pa./Trinity) was on second and scored on the play. Then in the fourth, freshman Reba Tutt (Culpeper, Va./Highland) tallied a RBI single when senior Rebecca Stottlemyer (Charleroi, Pa./Homeschooled) scored. Earlier, Tutt's triple in the second inning put the Panthers ahead 3-0, as senior Kelly Murphy (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) and sophomore Megan Livesey (Livingston, N.J./The Montclair Kimberly Academy) scored.
Tutt also scored in the first inning after senior Jessica Dignon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) doubled for her first hit of the day. Tutt was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run, while Dignon hit her 10th double of the season. Later, with bases loaded the Panthers then scored four runs off three hits in the seventh. First senior Mary Hecker (Roseville, Calif./Roseville) was hit by a pitch, scoring Amistade. Then sophomore Kayla Zinger (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunnyslope) drove in three runs off her lone hit, a double on the next play. The Panthers recorded their seventh shutout of the season in the win and posted their third eight-run victory. Additionally, Pitt holds an 8-2 record when scoring in the first inning. |
