Softball Sweeps Akron On The Road
April 2, 2008
PITTSBURGH--Senior Jessica Dignon led the Pitt softball team to a sweep, as the Panthers earned a 10-2 victory over Akron in the second game of their doubleheader, this afternoon, at Lee Jackson Field. The Panthers improved to 17-12, while the Zips slipped to 10-22 on the year. Dignon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) led all with six RBI and a run off 3-for-4 batting. After Pitt scored first with two runs in the third inning, Akron answered with two runs of their own off three hits. However, the Panthers responded quickly as freshman Alicia Broudy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) tallied a two-RBI single for the first two runs of the fourth inning. A few plays later, Dignon tallied a grand slam for the first time in her career with her fourth homer of the season. Dignon's RBI single in the sixth scored Broudy, while junior Samantha Card (Miami, Fla./Our Lady of Lourdes/Florida International) tallied a RBI single on the next at-bat to score freshman Reba Tutt (Culpeper, Va./Highland). Sophomore Kayla Zinger (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunnyslope) pitched the win, allowing five hits but striking out six in five innings. Freshman Alyssa O'Connell (Turnersville, N.J./Camden Catholic) struck out two batters in the sixth to end the game in six innings. Zinger saved a run in the fifth after a Zip hit a two-out triple. However, Zinger caught the next batter swinging.
