Softball Rallies Four Runs In Back-To-Back Innings
April 15, 2008
PITTSBURGH-The University of Pittsburgh softball team recorded four runs in back-to-back innings and earned a 9-2 victory over Robert Morris in the first game of today's doubleheader at Trees Field. The Panthers (23-17) scored four runs in the third inning off three hits and another four runs off two hits in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach. Trailing 1-0 after a third inning run by the Colonials (18-15), Pitt jumped on top with a pair of two-RBI singles from junior Samantha Card (Miami, Fla./Our Lady of Lourdes/Florida International) and senior Mary Hecker (Roseville, Calif./Roseville). Later in the fourth, freshman Mollie Illenberger (Doylestown, Pa./Central Buck West) entered the game with bases loaded and recorded two RBI when RMU's first baseman dropped the ball, allowing senior Rebecca Stottlemyer (Charleroi, Pa./Home schooled) and sophomore Megan Livesey (Livingston, N.J./The Montclair Kimberly Academy) to score. Freshman Reba Tutt (Culpeper, Va./Highland) scored a few plays later, when she and senior Jessica Dignon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) stole bases on a pitch to Card. Card then tallied another RBI in the contest when she doubled to right field, sending Dignon home. In the top of the fifth, the Colonials kept the game alive with their second run of the game off two hits and a Pitt error. However the Panthers would answer when Tutt hit her second double of the game to score Livesey. Freshman Cory Berliner (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) earned her 13th win on the mound, allowing seven hits but fanning two in the contest.
Tutt went 2-for-3 with two runs and a RBI, while Card was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run. |
