PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team (12-9, 3-6 BIG EAST) lost to West Virginia University (16-6, 5-4 BIG EAST) by the score of 77-65 on Saturday night at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. PC junior Randall Hanke led the Friars' offense with 18 points as he shot 7-of-9 from the field.

Trialing by three early 11-8, the Friars went on a 12-2 run and held a seven-point advantage 20-13 with 12:24 left in the first half. PC pushed its lead to 12 (36-24) with 6:33 left, but the Mountaineers answered with a 15-0 run to lead 39-36 with 1:00 left in the half. WVU led 41-38 at the intermission.

PC hit five 3-pointers in the first half. The Mountaineers, who totaled just 10 field goals and shot 20 percent from the floor in their last outing, a 62-39 home loss to Cincinnati on Jan. 30, had 17 field goals in the first half and shot 60.7 percent from the floor.

PC held a 43-42 lead minutes into the second half as sophomore Dwain Williams canned his third 3-pointer of the contest, but the Mountaineers answered with a 5-1 spurt and held a lead the rest of the way.

PC sophomore Ray Hall added six points as he went 3-of-4 from the field. Hall and Hanke combined to go 10-of-13 from the field.

The Mountaineers were led by senior Darris Nichols who totaled 22 points, including 16 in the second half. Nichols was one of three WVU players in double digits. Junior Joe Alexander finished with 19 points, while sophomore Joe Mazzulla, a Johnston, R.I., native, tallied 11.

The Friars return to the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Tuesday, Feb. 5, to host the DePaul Blue Demons at 7:30 p.m. ET.
