PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's hockey team climbed one spot to No. 11 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll and No. 12 in the USCHO.com/CSTV Poll, which were released on Monday, February 28. It marks PC's highest national ranking since January 23, 2006. The Friars (12-9-3, 9-5-2 Hockey East) are coming off a win and a tie this past weekend. On February 1, the Friars defeated No. 9 Boston College, 3-2, at Kelley Rink in Chestnut Hill, Mass. It marked PC's first win at Kelley Rink since January 24, 2003. Senior Jon Rheault (Deering, N.H.) and sophomore Greg Collins (Hingham, Mass.) scored in the first period to give PC a 2-0 lead. The Eagles tied the game at 2-2 in the second period, but junior Matt Taormina (Washington Township, Mich.) scored the game winner with 4:27 remaining in the third period to lift PC to its third consecutive win. In goal, senior Tyler Sims (Fort Wayne, Ind.) made 36 saves. The following night, the Friars played Merrimack to a 1-1 draw in North Andover, Mass. Freshman Kyle MacKinnon (Walnut, Calif.) gave the Friars a 1-0 first period lead, but the Warriors evened the score in the second period. PC finished with a 51-18 shot advantage over the Warriors.
