PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's hockey team will play the Boston College Eagles in a best-of-three Hockey East quarterfinal series, beginning on Friday, March 14 at 7:00 p.m. at Kelley Rink in Chestnut Hill, Mass. It will mark the third time ever (first since 1998), that PC and BC will meet in the Hockey East Quarterfinals.

Boston College finished as the fourth seed and Providence College finished as the fifth seed. The second game of the series will be on Saturday, March 15 at 7:00 p.m. and if a third game is necessary it will be on Sunday, March 16 at 7:00 p.m. All games will be played at Kelley Rink.

The Friars (14-15-5 overall, 11-11-5 Hockey East) posted a 2-0-1 record against the Eagles this season with both wins coming at Kelley Rink. The Friars earned 3-2 victories over BC on February 1 and on February 29. It marked the first time since the 1995-96 campaign that the Friars recorded two wins at Kelley Rink. In addition, the Friars captured their first regular season series against the Eagles since the 2001-02 season. Senior Jon Rheault (Deering, N.H.) leads the team in scoring with 29 points on 17 goals and 12 assists, while junior Matt Taormina (Washington Township, Mich.) is second with 25 points (eight goals, 17 assists). In goal, senior Tyler Sims (Fort Wayne, Ind.) has played in 31 games and has posted a 2.46 goals against average and a .909 save percentage.

The Eagles secured the fourth seed and home ice with a 4-1 win over at Northeastern on Saturday, March 8. BC scored three times in a span on one minute and six seconds, late in the first period en route to the win. Nathan Gerbe leads the team in scoring with 48 points on 24 goals and 24 assists, while Joe Whitney is second with 41 points (seven goals, 34 assists). In goal, John Muse has played in every game and has posted a 2.38 goals against average and a .913 save percentage.

 

 

The last time the two teams met in the Hockey East Quarterfinals, the Eagles swept the best-of-three series in 1998 at Kelley Rink. Prior to that, the Friars swept the Eagles in a quarterfinal series in 1996 at Schneider Arena. PC then went on to capture its second Hockey East Tournament crown. Overall, the Friars have posted a 3-4 all-time record against the Eagles in the Hockey East Tournament, including a 2-1 double overtime win in the inaugural championship game in 1985.
