Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Freshman Alex Redding (Newton, Mass.) scored the overtime game winner in the 95th minute as the Providence College men's soccer team posted a 3-2 victory over Seton Hall in a crucial BIG EAST match played at Glay Field. With the win, the Friars, who have won four consecutive matches, improved to 9-5-1, including a 5-3-1 mark in conference play. The Pirates fell to 7-8-0 and 3-5-0 in the league.

Redding, the reigning BIG EAST Rookie of the Week, tallied his third goal in the last four games when he was able to re-direct a low cross from senior Ryan Maduro (Bristol, R.I.) into the right corner of the net. For the Friars, it marked their second overtime win this season, both of which have come on their home pitch. The Friars are 6-1-1 at home, including a 3-0-1 mark in league contests at Glay Field.

The Pirates rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie the match and force overtime. Eliseo Giusfredi converted a penalty kick in the 65th minute as he buried the ball in the lower left corner for his team leading 10th goal of the season. In the 80th minute, junior Christian Vercollone sent a cross from the right wing to Justin McGrath whose low header from five yards out found the back of the net.

However, in the 83rd minute an SHU player was sent off after receiving a red card and the Pirates had to play a man down. The Friars controlled the match the rest of the way culminating in Redding's second game winner in the last four matches.

Providence struck first in the 14th minute when senior Michael Narciso (Livingston, N.J.) tallied his second goal in as many games. Sophomore Justin Kahle (Oceanport, N.J.) drove a hard, low cross and Narciso was able to re-direct the ball past SHU goalkeeper Paul McHenry. In the second half, Kahle also scored his second goal in consecutive matches to give the Friars a 2-0 lead. Maduro played the ball ahead down the left flank to Kahle, who eluded a defender before ripping a low right-footed shot to left corner of the net.

Junior goalie Timothy Murray (Haverhill, Mass.), who was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week on Monday, made seven saves, while McHenry stopped three shots for the Pirates.

The Friars are back in action on Sunday, October 28 when they host No. 4/11 Notre Dame beginning at 2:00 p.m.
