NEW HAVEN, CONN. - This past Friday and Saturday the Men's and Women's Track and Field Team competed at the 3rd Annual Giegengack Invitational at Coxe Gage on the campus of Yale University. In the men's meet, junior Charles Dewey (Worcester, Mass.) and senior James Lourenco (West Warwick, R.I.) placed fourth and fifth in the 400m with Dewey running an IC4A qualifying time of 49.15 and Lourenco running a New England qualifying time of 49.86. Senior Chris McDermott (West Haven, Conn.) finished 5th overall in the 800m with a time of 1:53.94. Also in the 800m, junior Nick Berluti (Westwood, Mass.) finished 7th overall with an IC4A qualifying time of 1:54.34. The Friar men's 4x400m relay team set a new school record, finishing in a time of 3:20.73. Freshman Brian Stannard (East Longmeadow, Mass.) led the relay off with a 51.46 split, handing off to Lourenco who split a 49.55. Dewey ran third for the Friars with a 48.24 split for the 400m and McDermott anchored the relay in a split time of 51.48. The record time beat the previous record by nearly a full second, which was 3:21.63, held since 2007. In the women's meet, freshman Emma Perron (West Hartford, Conn.) and senior Michelle Childs (Cameron, Ontario) finished fourth and fifth overall in the mile with Perron running a Big East Qualifying time of 5:03.30 and Childs also qualifying for the Big East Championships with a time of 5:03.49. Junior Katherine Schock (Norwood, Mass.) had a strong showing in the 800m with a time of 2:17.70.
The Providence College Indoor Track team will return to action when they compete in the Valentine Invitational at Boston University on February 8th and 9th. The Women will compete on Friday, February 8th and the Men will compete on Saturday, February 9th.
