PROVIDENCE, R.I. - PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (5-3, 1-0 BIG EAST): The Providence College field hockey team enters Sunday's game against Maine with a 5-3 overall record. In Providence's most recent game, it was defeated, 1-0, by Northeastern on September 19 in Providence, R.I. The loss snapped a five-game win streak, including four-straight shutouts leading up to the contest. It also marked the first time Providence had been scored upon in 314 minutes of play.

Senior forward Abby Maguire (Southbury, Conn.) and senior defender Michalagh Stoddard (Norwood, Mass.) lead the Friars in scoring this season with eight points apiece. Maguire has scored four goals, while Stoddard has recorded three goals and two assists. Sophomore Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) and freshman Julie Ruggieri (Barrington, R.I.) have six points each on three goals and one assist. Juniors Meghan Holden (Worcester, Mass.) and Jessica Lane (South Windsor, Conn.) follow with six points each. Holden has one goal and four assists, while Lane leads the team in assists with six.

Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) has played 529 minutes in goal for Providence this season through eight games. She has allowed just five goals and has made 30 saves for a 0.66 goals against average and a 0.857 save percentage. Two of her five victories have been shutouts, while she has teamed with fellow goalkeeper Kim Vesling (Pittsford, N.Y.) for two additional shutouts. Vesling has played 31 scoreless minutes in the cage and has made three saves.

 

 

UNIVERSITY OF MAINE (3-4, 0-0 America East): The University of Maine field hockey team currently holds a record of 3-4 going into the weekend and will host the University of Rhode Island on Saturday, September 22 and Providence College on Sunday, September 23. The Blackbears started the season with four-straight losses, but have rebounded to win each of their last three games. Maine won its last game on September 16 vs. Quinnipiac by a score of 3-2. Maine is 1-0 at home this season, 2-2 on its opponent's home field and 0-2 at neutral sites.

To date, Amy Zdrojesky leads the Blackbears in scoring with six points on two goals and two assists. Courtney Veinotte, Erin Reusch and Nicole Emery are tied for second on the team in scoring with five points apiece. Each member of the trio has recorded two goals and one assist. Kim MacDonald owns four points on the year (two goals).

Rebecca Giroux has played 291 minutes in goal for Maine this season and owns a 2-2 record. She has recorded 23 saves and allowed six goals for a 1.44 goals against average and a 0.793 save percentage. Maygan Cassarino has played 217 minutes for the Blackbears in goal and has recorded a 1-2 record. She has made 20 saves and has allowed seven goals for a 0.741 save percentage and a 2.26 goals against average.
