MIAMI, Fla. - The Providence College softball team upset No. 21 Georgia, 4-0, on Sunday, February 17 in the final day of competition at the Schutt Sports Invitational in Miami, Fla. The win marked the first of the season for the Friars who improved to 1-4. It also marked PC's first win over a nationally ranked opponent since the Friars defeated No. 23 DePaul on April 1, 2006. Junior pitcher Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) led the way for the Friars. She pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing just one hit and striking out one batter. The Friars scored all of their four runs in the third inning. After loading the bases with one out, sophomore Christy Becker (Atlanta, Ga.) drew a walk to drive in Maccio who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Junior Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to increase PC's lead to 2-0. Senior Samantha Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) followed up with an RBI single which turned into two runs after a throwing error. Maccio, who allowed a hit to start the game, held the Bulldogs hitless the rest of the way to improve her record to 1-1.
The Friars are back in action on February 22 when they play at the UC Davis Invitational in Davis, Calif.
