Game One Box Score | Game Two Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team split a BIG EAST Conference double header against Seton Hall Friday afternoon at Raymond Field in Providence, R.I. Seton Hall (16-21, 3-9 BIG EAST) posted a 2-1 victory in the first game in eight innings. Providence (16-17-1, 2-6 BIG EAST) also needed eight innings to record a 5-4 win in the second contest.

The Friars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the first game. Sophomore Katelyn Revens (Warwick, R.I.) doubled down the right field line and later came around to score on an RBI single by junior Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.). The Pirates evened the score (1-1) in the fifth inning when Kealan Waldron hit a single to right field to score Ashley Constantini who led off the inning with a walk. The Pirates scored the winning run in the eighth inning when Shannon Pease doubled down the right field line to score Waldron.

Ashley Forsyth earned the win as she pitched eight innings, allowed three hits and struck out two batters. PC's Danielle Bertolette allowed four hits and struck out five batters in eight innings of action.

The Friars again jumped out to a 1-0 first inning lead in the second game as sophomore Jenna Garcia (Morro Bay, Calif.) hit a line drive home run over the left field fence. In the second inning, the Pirates took a 2-1 lead when Pease hit a two-run home run. In the top of the fourth inning, Seton Hall added two more runs to make the score, 4-1. Pinch runner Stephanie Bontales scored on a wild pitch, while Waldron hit a sacrifice fly to plate the second run of the inning and give the Pirates a three-run cushion. However, in the bottom half of the inning, junior Gina Rossi (Bakersfield, Calif.) led off with a double, while freshman Justine Stratton (Fresno, Calif.) followed with a single. Sophomore Teresa Bertels (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) then came up and blasted a three-run home run to center field to tie the game, 4-4.

Sophomore Christy Becker (Atlanta, Ga.) provided the game-winning hit for the Friars as she led off the eighth inning with a walk-off home run. It marked her team leading sixth home run of he season. Becker also nearly won the first game for the Friars as she led off the seventh inning with a drive to left center that appeared to have home run distance, but the wind knocked it and it ended up being a double.

Bertolette earned the win as she pitched over three innings and did not allow a hit while striking out one batter.

The Friars are back in action on Sunday, April 13 when they host St. John's in a BIG EAST double header beginning at noon.
