KINGSTON, R.I. - The Providence College softball team pounded out 25 hits en route to a double header sweep at the University of Rhode Island on Wednesday afternoon. The Friars (23-19-2) posted a 14-1 win (five innings) in the first game and rallied in the seventh inning to secure a 4-3 victory in the second game over the Rams (14-32).

In the first game, the Friars recorded 14 hits and defeated the Rams, 14-1, in five innings. Providence took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, taking advantage of an error. URI evened the score in the bottom half of the inning on a double by Leah DiBussolo. The Friars took control of the game in the second inning as they scored six runs with two outs to take a 7-1. Sophomore Christy Becker (Atlanta, Ga.) capped off the inning with a three-run home run. For Becker, it marked her team-leading seventh home run of the season.

Providence added one run in the fourth inning and erupted for six more runs in the fifth inning. Junior Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) hit a double with the bases loaded to drive in three runs, while classmate Gina Rossi (Bakersfield, Calif.) capped off the fifth inning with a two-run home run. It marked Rossi's sixth home run of the season. Rossi, Becker, sophomore Jenna Garcia (Morro Bay, Calif.) and freshman Justine Stratton (Fresno, Calif.) each finished with two hits, while sophomore Katelyn Revens (Warwick, R.I.) led the way with three hits. Revens also recorded three stolen bases and set a Providence College record with her 33rd career stolen base. Classmate Danielle Bertolette (Temecula, Calif.) earned the win to improve to 13-8.

 

 

In the second game, the Friars rallied from a 3-0 deficit to post a 4-3 victory. The Rams scored all three of their runs in the third inning highlighted by DiBussolo's two-run triple. The Friars cut the lead to 3-1 in the fourth inning on a double by sophomore Teresa Bertels (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.). Senior Samantha Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) hit an RBI single in the sixth inning to trim URI's edge to 3-2. With two outs in the seventh inning, Becker and Rossi each hit a single and then Stratton hit a two-run double to give PC a 4-3 lead.

Freshman Kathryn Sullivan (Lagrangeville, N.Y.), who came in relief in the third inning, held off the Rams to earn her second win of the season. Sullivan pitched four-plus innings, allowed no runs on four hits and struck out three batters. Garcia and Rossi each had five hits in the double header.

The Friars are back in action on Saturday, April 26 when they face Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.
