UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - For the second time this year, junior men's gymnast Casey Sandy (Brampton, Ont.) and junior women's swimmer Kelly Nelson (West Chester, Pa.) have been named the Penn State Student-Athletes of the Week.
Sandy upheld his status as the nation's No. 1 all-around competitor, claiming his fifth title in five tries this season with a score of 91.000. Winning the high bar title and all-around crown versus No. 7 Ohio State, he helped the No. 2 Nittany Lions post a season-high score of 360.550.
In the meet, the junior had his third high bar win of 2008 with a season-best score of 15.250. Sandy also finished in second in the floor exercise and parallel bars and third in the still rings (tie) and vault, giving him 29 top three finishes this season.
Nelson was named second team All-Big Ten after having a standout meet at the Big Ten Championships. She finished second in two events, the 200 butterfly and the 200 freestyle breaking both school records in the process.
Nelson also finished third in the 500 free and was a part of the fourth place 800 free relay team, the fifth place 400 medley relay team and the sixth place 400 free and 200 medley relay teams. The junior was the high point scorer for Penn State at the meet.
