University Park - National champion Pat Schirk (Pottstown, Pa.) and First Team All-Big Ten selection Brandi Personett (Katy, Texas) have been named this week's Penn State Student-Athletes of the Week.
Schirk made Penn State history after winning the first-ever individual national championship in men's swimming taking first place in the 200 backstroke at NCAA Championships. In doing so, he also broke his own school record in the event, touching the wall in 1:40.22. He is the first individual swimming All-American since 1943.
The junior also finished eighth in the 100 backstroke finals on Friday. His exploits also helped the Nittany Lions finish 23rd as a team at NCAA's, their highest finish since 2002.
Sophomore women's gymnast Personett captured her second consecutive individual all-around title with a career-high-typing 39.525 at the 2008 Big Ten Championships Saturday in Ann Arbor, Mich.
A two-time First Team All-Big Ten selection, Personett also defended her Big Ten vault title as she posted a first-place 9.950 and tied for the floor crown with a score of 9.900. Her floor score was her ninth individual floor title this season and her 10th score of 9.900 or better on floor.
