University Park - Men's tennis' Brendan Lynch (North Potomac, Md.) and women's track and field's Karlee McQuillen (Johnstown, Pa.) have been named this week's Penn State Student-Athletes of the Week.
Lynch tallied a 3-0 mark in Penn State's three consecutive 7-0 sweeps last week. The Nittany Lion junior did not drop a set over the course of his three singles matches.
In singles action, Lynch first knocked off Bucknell's Ryan Sandburg by a score of 6-2, 6-1. He then relinquished just two games in his 6-1, 6-1 straight-sets victory over Bloomsburg's Dan Gal. In the Lions' bout with Michigan State on Saturday, he notched the match-clinching point with his win over the Spartans' John Allare (6-3, 6-4).
In doubles action, Lynch teamed with senior Michael James to oust Michigan State's No. 1 doubles team by a score of 8-3. Lynch and James, who are ranked 23rd in the national rankings, improved to 14-1 in dual matches with the victory. Lynch owns a team-best 26-8 overall singles record this season.
McQuillen launched a career-best 176-0 (53.64) on her first attempt in the javelin at the Sun Angel Classic at Arizona State, tacking nearly 12 feet onto her previous best to better Carrie Karabinos' 169-3(51.58) from 1999.
The freshman is also among the top five throws in the NCAA this season. McQuillen won the event - her first collegiate victory - by over six feet setting a school record as well as an American Junior Record (Under 20).
