April 29, 2008

University Park, Pa. - Baseball's Cory Wine (Stillwater, Okla.) and the women's track and field's 4x400-meter relay team consisting of Dominique Blake (Bronx, N.Y.), Aleesha Barber (Decatur, Ga.), Gayle Hunter (Riverside, Calif.), and Shana Cox (Westbury, N.Y.) have been named this week's Penn State Student-Athletes of the Week.

Wine had a big weekend at the plate at Illinois, hitting .412 in the four game series with three home runs and nine RBIs. The first baseman had a 1.000 slugging percentage for the weekend, accumulating 17 total bases, and reached base at a .444 clip.

In Saturday's first game, the junior recorded his first career multi-home run game, hitting home runs in consecutive at-bats and knocking in a career high five runs. He also went 3-for-5 with an RBI in Friday's game, knocked in two RBIs in game two on Saturday, and hit an RBI in Sunday's game.

In Wednesday's game against Youngstown State, he had an important ninth-inning single that helped Penn State rally from a three-run deficit in the inning to force extra innings.

The Nittany Lion women's 4x400-meter relay team made Penn State history on Saturday, capturing the programs first-ever Championship of America crown in the event at Penn Relays, winning the race with a school-record 3:31.44, and bettering national powerhouses LSU, Texas A&M, and South Carolina.

The win was the first since the Nittany Lions won the 4x800-meters in 1978, and the first since the NCAA began sponsoring women's sports in the early 1980s. The Nittany Lions bettered the previous school record 3:31.75 from 2007, which include Blake, Hunter, Cox, and Briene Simmons (Decatur, Ga.) at last year's NCAA East Regional Championships.

This is the fourth Student-Athlete of the Week award for Cox, and the second for Hunter.
