UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Visiting St. Bonaventure pulled away with four runs in the final two innings and defeated Richmond, 7-2, Thursday afternoon in an Atlantic 10 baseball game at Pitt Field. Junior Ryan Metzroth's two-run homer in the eighth accounted for the Spiders' only runs. The series continues Friday at 3 p.m.

Metzroth collected two of Richmond's six hits, launched his fifth homer of the season and extended his hitting streak to six games. Freshman Andrew Lowry doubled in the ninth to stretch his hitting streak to five games, but was one of seven Spiders (19-30-2, 9-15-1) stranded on base.

Sophomore Matt Zielinski scattered six hits and three runs over his six innings of work, but the offense failed to fire in support of the defending Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year. He fanned three, walked one and was tagged for just his second loss of the season (5-2).

The Bonnies improved to 28-21 overall, 14-11 in conference and moved to within a win of clinching a playoff spot thanks to 4.2 strong innings from starter Matt Stewart. Although not eligible for the win, Stewart pitched a three-hit shutout for the Bonnies and fanned one against three walks.

Jim Britton tossed three innings of relief to pick up the win (5-4).

Metzroth's two-run homer scored Derek Boliek, who led off the eighth by reaching on an error. But a lead-off error also proved costly for the Spiders in the top of the inning when the Bonnies plated three insurance runs -- two of which were unearned off reliever Josh Horn.

Senior left fielder Hank Coogan gunned down Randy Moley on a play at the plate in the third inning, limiting Kevin Suminski's single with runners at second and third to just a run. It marked Coogan's second straight game with an outfield assist and third in the last four games after throwing out runners at third base against both Old Dominion and Charlotte.

The Spiders, who have now played six of the top seven A-10 teams in the unbalanced schedule, matched their longest winless streak of the season at five.
