UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
The Spider field hockey team is preparing for a season-opening road trip to Ball State and Miami (OH) next Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 30 & 31. Second year head coach Gina Lucido took some time to preview the season for RichmondSpiders.com.
Tell me about your newcomers:
Our freshmen class has come in mentally prepared to face the challenges that this season will bring. They apply coaching instruction quickly and respond to the demands of expectation placed on the upperclassmen. I know they are all fully invested in my vision for this 2008 season.
What is going to be a key aspect of focus for practice?
We continue to strive for consistent practice intensity. Pushing ourselves beyond comfort physically, and mentally has not become a habit yet. If we learn to thrive on that challenge, instead of shying away from the tiring work needed to achieve that goal, we will see competitive game performance this year throughout the season.
What do you hope to improve on from last year?
We hope to play with passion and pride every time we have the opportunity to compete. We have to work hard enough that losing actually hurts because we competed relentlessly.
What specific experience/insight will Coach Elliott bring to the Spiders?
Ryan brings a male perspective with international playing, coaching experience. His ability to scout the tactical play of our team and opponents will be a huge compliment to our staff. We are thrilled to have him with us.
