May 8, 2008
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The outdoor track team's fourth season will come to a close this upcoming weekend, when the team will be split into two teams to compete in the Aggie Twilight at UC Davis and the Occidental Invitational at Occidental.
For the Occidental Invitational, Santa Clara will be sending its finest long distance runners. Senior standout Michael Delaurenti will race this weekend at the Occidental Invitational in an effort to break his NCAA-qualifying time of 9:07 in the men's steeplechase. Although Delaurenti has qualified to compete in the NCAA Regionals, he is looking to break 9:00 so that he can compete in a higher heat at the regionals later this month.
Joining Delaurenti on the men's side at Occidental will be freshman Christopher Mosier and junior Daniel Smith. On the women's side, Santa Clara will be represented by senior Danielle Miller, junior Veronica Vazquez, and sophomore Stephanie Wilson.
The rest of the Broncos will make their way back to UC Davis for the Aggie Twilight. Sophomore John Laughlin and junior Ben Snyder will run in the 1500 M while freshmen Robert Reid and George Sanchez will compete in the 100 M, 200 M, and the 800 M. Anna Wheatley, Joanna Gistand will compete in the hurdle events, and junior Whitney Porter will run in the 5 K.
"Since this will be our last meet of the season, we're all going into these races as if they're the championship," said head coach Tom Service. "We've kept a very positive attitude throughout this entire season and I think that a lot of the team will be able to break their fastest times this weekend."
