Santa Clara's John Bryant Named CollegeHoops.net All-American

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara men's basketball center John Bryant was named a Mid-Major All-America honorable mention by CollegeHoops.net it was announced Friday. The CollegeHoops.net All-American teams are voted on by staff writers. Bryant put together one of the most impressive seasons ever for a Bronco big man, leading both Santa Clara and the West Coast Conference in scoring, rebounding and blocks.

The 6-10 junior from San Pablo, Calif., averaged 18.0 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game helping Santa Clara to a 15-16 finish and a West Coast Conference tournament semifinal appearance. Bryant ranked first in the WCC in rebounding, field goal percentage (.583) and blocked shots, and second in scoring. Displaying tremendous consistency game-to-game, he produced a league and team-best 15 double-doubles, with double figure points in 28 out of 30 games and had over 10 rebounds 15 times.

Against Loyola Marymount on Feb. 18, he posted a career-high 36 points and tied his career rebound tally of 17 against San Francisco in the second round of the WCC Tournament. Twice this season, he blocked a career-high seven shots (against Sacramento State in non-conference action on Nov. 25 and versus USF on March 8).

Bryant became the 27th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points with his 18 points effort on Feb. 23 against San Diego. He hit the 1,000-point barrier with a put back against the Toreros for his last basket of the game. He will enter his senior campaign in 2008-09 ranked 23rd all-time with 1,071 points.
