May 8, 2008

Sacred Heart University mascot Big Red joined some of the most recognizable team mascots in all of sports yesterday afternoon at the Grand Opening of the Sports Museum of America. Big Red along with the likes of Mr. Met (New York Mets), Scoop (Philadelphia Eagles), Sly (New Jersey Nets), Maggie (New York Liberty) and Sparky (New York Islanders / Dragons) among others made their way around lower Manhattan to promote the event while taking hundreds of pictures with fans.

Big Red also met members of WFAN Sports Radio 660 and SportsNet New York at an event that was headlined by appearances of many professional athletes including the likes of Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning, Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova, Clyde Drexler, Allan Houston, Jason Williams, Walt Frazier and many more. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg was also present to participate in the ceremonies.

Opening on May 7, 2008 in New York City, the Sports Museum of America (SmA) is the nation's first and only museum to celebrate, under one roof, all of the sports Americans love. Created in exclusive partnership with more than 50 single-sport Halls of Fame, Museums, National Governing Bodies and other sports organizations from across North America; SmA is further distinguished by our Honorary Board of Trustees, which includes some of the most beloved and respected athletes in all of sports.

The museum is the proud new home of the legendary Heisman Trophy, college football's top honor, first awarded in 1935. The museum will also be housing the Billie Jean King International Women's Sports Center, including the first ever hall of fame dedicated to women's sports, the Women's Sports Foundation International Women's Sports Hall of Fame.
