Final Stats

BROOKLYN, NY - James Jones allowed just one run over 6 1/3 innings, while Johnny Neckar drove in a pair of runs to lead the Long Island University baseball team to a 5-1 win over visiting Sacred Heart in the opening game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

LIU, 9-19 overall and 1-5 in the Northeast Conference, got single runs off SHU starter Chris Barthel in the first and second innings. Jones doubled with one out in the first and scored on a ground out. Greg Desantis made it 2-0 with an RBI single in the second.

Lynch got the Pioneers, 3-25 and 1-5, back within a run with a solo blast in the top of the fourth. The Blackbirds got it right back with an RBI signgle by Neckar in the bottom of the frame.

LIU put the game away with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. One of the runs scored on a sac fly by Chris Kievit and the other on a grounder by Neckar.

The Pioneers finished the game with seven hits, two of them by sophomore JJ Edwards. LIU finished with six hits.
