WELLESLEY, MA - The Sacred Heart men's fencing team defeated New Hampshire 18-9, Boston University 20-7, Tufts 16-11 and UMASS 18-9 in the last weekend of conference play on Saturday at Wellesley College. The only loss of the day was a 17-10 defeat at the hands of Boston College. The team wrapped up their conference campaign with a 5-5 record.
Leading the way for the Pioneers was foil squad captain Dan Convery-Zupan, who finished with a 13-2 mark on the day. Joining him with winning records was fellow foilist Jim Roberts (10-5), saberists Matt Laudicina (10-5) and Jay Manzella (8-7), and epeeists Sean McGeveran (12-3), Charlie Thompson (9-6), Nate Quigley (5-1) and Kyle Dee (6-3).
"Considering that we are starting six fencers that are in their first year at SHU I think we had a pretty qood campaign," comments head coach Dr. Tom Vrabel. "Dan and Sean have had great years and the rest of the squad continues to improve. With addition's next year like Marty Williams, Nick Negron, and Henry Crocker, we should be able to contend for the league championship."
The team completes their dual meet schedule with a 5 PM match at Columbia on Wednesday.
