Sacred Heart incoming freshman golfer Leopoldo Garcia put the finishing touches on his Puerto Rico Golf Association career earlier this month by making history as the only junior golfer to have won the Junior Island Championship three consecutive years. Garcia won the tournament seven strokes and became the only junior golfer in Puerto Rico's history to have won the tournament consecutively at ages 16,17 and 18.
"I am very happy to have won this event and set the record of three consecutive wins," said Garcia at the traditional Champions speech. "I've been competing in PRGA events since I was 12-years-old and it feels great to end on a positive note."
Garcia posted rounds of 75-70-76 for a cumulative score of 221 (5-over-par). He began the event tied for the lead with Robert Calvesbert, but that quickly changed after Garcia fired two-under-par 70 in the second round of the event.
Garcia will join the Pioneers this fall as they set out to defend their 2008 Northeast Conference Men's Golf Championship.
