FAIRFIELD, Conn. (February 1, 2008) - The Springfield College Pride posted a .396 hitting percentage in sweeping Sacred Heart, 3-0, in the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association opener for both teams Friday night in the William H. Pitt Center. The Pioneers fall to 0-3 to start the season while Springfield improved to 5-1.
The Pride had three players post double digit kills led by Ryan Fredrickson who finished with 13 and a game-high .588 (13-3-17) hitting percentage. Fredrickson also chipped in five digs and a solo block in the win. Mark Ribeiro posted 10 kills in 16 attempts with just two errors (.500) and had four digs defensively. Cal Palumbo hit .471 in the match on 10 kills in 17 attempts with two errors. The Pride did struggle serving the ball with 21 errors in the match.
Sacred Heart got five kills for sophomore Kalani Efstathiou (Beaverton, OR), junior BJ Smith (Shelton, CT) and senior Chris Yantz (Setauket, NY). Yantz also added six digs in the loss. Freshman Tim Sadowski (Salem, NH) was solid in game three, picking up four kills in five attempts.
The Pioneers return to the court tomorrow afternoon traveling to Harvard for a 5:00 pm match. SHU is back at home on Tuesday night hosting Rutgers-Newark at 7:00 pm.
